Basic Function and Scope:

The Cook oversees and coordinates the preparation and delivery of nutritional meals and snack for the residents of LACGH LTC according to all appropriate regulations and standards including the Fixing the Long Term Care Act.  The Cook will carry out the duties in alignment to the organization’s mission, vision and values and work to further its priorities.

Hours of Work:
Schedule rotation will include all shifts and weekends.
Pay Rate:
$28.22-$30.00

Qualifications & Requirements

In accordance with the Ontario Ministry of Long-Term Care requirements, the successful candidate must possess one of the following qualifications:

  • Chef Training or Culinary Management Diploma/Certificate from:
  • an Ontario College of Applied Arts and Technology; or a registered private career college with a program approved by the Superintendent of Private Career Colleges
  • A culinary diploma or certificate obtained in another jurisdiction with skills and competencies that are, in the opinion of the employer, equivalent to the Ontario educational requirements.
  • A valid Certificate of Qualification in the trade of Cook or Institutional Cook issued under applicable Ontario apprenticeship and skilled trades legislation
  • Candidates who were employed as cooks in an Ontario long-term care home prior to July 1, 2010, may qualify if they meet the grandfathering provisions under Ontario Regulation, including:
  • Completion of an approved Food Service Worker Program
  • Previous experience in a hospital or long term care setting is an asset.
  • Minimum 2 years cooking experience
  • Experienced in  large quantity food preparation, as well as cooking from “scratch”
  • Able to demonstrate knowledge of food services best practices (Safe food handling, food temperatures, clean equipment etc.);
  • Working knowledge of or willingness to learn computer applications including Cerner/Lumeo, DFM and Microsoft Office Suite;
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, courteously and tactfully;
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision;
  • Ability to work independently and within a team environment;
  • Must have previous proven good performance and attendance record.
  • Demonstrated time management and prioritization skills with ability to function within a fast paced environment with a continuous mindset of improvement.

Demonstrated ability to adapt to change within an environment with a continuous process improvement mindset.

The applicant must be able to meet the physical demands of this position.
