Department of Diagnostic Imaging, Computed Tomography

CT is a diagnostic imaging test used to create detailed images of internal organs, bones, soft tissues and blood vessels. The cross-sectional images generated during a CT scan can be reformatted in multiple planes, and can even generate three-dimensional images, which can be viewed on a computer monitor, printed on film or transferred to electronic media. CT is fast, painless, noninvasive and accurate. In emergency cases, a CT can reveal internal injuries and bleeding quickly enough to help save lives.

FAQs

Have questions about your CT scan? This section covers what to expect, how to prepare, and how the scan helps support your diagnosis and care.

What is a CT scan used for?

CT scans are used to diagnose and monitor a wide range of conditions, including injuries, tumors, infections, and vascular disease.

How long does the scan take?

The scan itself typically takes about 10 minutes; expect your full visit to last 20–30 minutes including check-in.

Is a CT scan safe?

CT scans use low-dose radiation and are considered safe when medically necessary. Your provider will ensure the benefits outweigh any risk.

What should I do to prepare?

You may need to avoid food or drink before your test, depending on the scan. Follow any instructions provided by the hospital or your physician. If you require contrast dye, make sure to be well hydrated for your appointment. If you have a history of allergy to dye, make sure to take the allergy medication prescribed by your referring health care provider.

Will I need contrast dye?

Some CT scans require contrast dye to improve image clarity. You will be informed in advance if this applies to your scan.
