The Diagnostic Imaging Department at LACGH provides comprehensive ultrasound services in a state-of-the-art, patient-friendly environment. Our team performs a wide range of ultrasound exams to help physicians diagnose and monitor a variety of health conditions. Ultrasound, also known as sonography, uses high-frequency sound waves to capture live images from inside the body.

Ultrasound imaging is non-invasive, uses no ionizing radiation, and is a key diagnostic tool in modern medicine.

As of December 1, 2025, the estimated wait time for non-urgent Ultrasound studies referred to the Lennox and Addington County General Hospital will be posted once confirmed.

What is an Ultrasound?

Ultrasound is a diagnostic imaging technique that captures live images using high-frequency sound waves. It allows for detailed visualization of internal organs, tissues, and blood flow. Ultrasound is painless, safe, and commonly used for a variety of medical conditions, including pregnancy, kidney function, and soft tissue evaluation.

Physician referral required.

Preparation / What to Bring

  • To avoid misplacing items, do not wear any jewelry to your appointment
  • Wear loose clothing without metal zippers or buttons
  • Bring your Ontario Health Card (OHIP)
  • Bring a book to read and a water bottle in case of longer wait times
  • Please remember to follow the preparation instructions provided by our clerk
  • Referral form from your physician (if applicable)
  • Any relevant medical records or previous imaging results

Ultrasound exams require a physician referral.
Once your referral is submitted, our Diagnostic Imaging Department will contact you to confirm the appointment and provide preparation instructions.

Appointments require a referral from your healthcare provider. Depending on the type of ultrasound, specific preparation may be needed. For example, you may need to have a full bladder or fast for a number of hours prior to the exam. When booking, ask the clerk for any preparation instructions.
