Department of Diagnostic Imaging, Magnetic Resonance Imaging

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is a non-invasive diagnostic tool that provides highly detailed images of organs, soft tissues, bones, and other internal body structures. Unlike X-rays or CT scans, MRI uses a powerful magnetic field and radiofrequency energy rather than ionizing radiation. At LACGH, MRI scans are performed in a newly equipped, patient-focused facility that enhances comfort and convenience.

Estimated Wait Times

As of December 1, 2025, the estimated wait time for non-urgent Magnetic Resonance Imaging scans referred to Lennox and Addington County General Hospital will be posted once confirmed.

Program Details

MRI, or magnetic resonance imaging, is a safe and highly effective method for visualizing internal body structures. During the scan, a strong magnetic field and radiofrequency energy interact with the body’s protons, creating clear, computer-processed images. Unlike CT or X-ray, MRI does not use ionizing radiation.

Once the MRI Booking Office receives your completed requisition from your healthcare provider, a staff member will call you to conduct a safety screening related to your medical history and any past surgeries. This step is important due to the strong magnetic field used during MRI scans. Once screening is complete and no additional documentation is needed, you’ll be scheduled for your exam.

You will be advised of any specific instructions at the time of booking. If no instructions are given, simply arrive on time for your appointment.

Eligibility

Physician referral required; patients must pass MRI safety screening requirements.

Preparation / What to Bring

  • Wear loose clothing without metal zippers or buttons
  • Bring your Ontario Health Card (OHIP)
