A BMD test is a low-dose X-ray that measures bone density and helps physicians assess osteoporosis risk. From these results, physicians can tailor treatment plans that include exercise, calcium / vitamin D, and fall-prevention strategies.

Important Program Updates – April, 2026

Bone Mineral Density (BMD) follow-up timelines have recently changed across Ontario based on Osteoporosis Canada guidelines.

Your recommended follow-up interval may be different than in previous years. Please speak with your healthcare provider for more information.

Monday-Tuesday 7:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m.

  • Quick, painless scan (≈ 10 minutes)
  • Extremely low radiation dose
  • Spine and hip measurements reported in T-score / Z-score format
  • Timely image review by LACGH radiologists; report sent to referring provider

Services

  • Baseline BMD study (spine + hip)
  • Follow-up BMD comparison (≥ 24 months post baseline)
  • Vertebral fracture assessment (VFA) when indicated

Eligibility

Physician referral required; patients must meet Osteoporosis Canada guidelines for testing frequency.

Preparation / What to Bring

  • Do not take calcium supplements within 24 hours of your exam
  • Wear loose clothing without metal zippers or buttons
  • Bring your Ontario Health Card (OHIP) and medication list

This program is located on in the Lenadco Building on Bridge Street West in Unit G2.

Referral & Booking Information

Patients require referral from their physician.
Appointments are booked through the Diagnostic Imaging Department.

How long does the test take?

About 10 minutes of scanning time; total visit ≈ 30 minutes.

Is there any pain or discomfort?

The test is painless and non-invasive.

How often should I have a BMD?

Most adults need a repeat test every 24 months unless otherwise directed.

Will my results be mailed to me?

Results are sent to your referring provider, who will discuss them with you.

Can I have a BMD test if I’m pregnant?

BMD testing is not recommended during pregnancy due to the small amount of radiation used. Always inform your doctor or the technologist if you are or might be pregnant.

When will my healthcare provider receive the report?

Reports are typically sent within 24–48 hours after your scan. If you haven’t heard from your provider within a week, you may wish to follow up with their office.
