Emergency & Critical Care

Our Emergency Department (ED) treats life-threatening injuries and sudden illnesses, using a triage system to ensure the sickest patients are seen first. Nursing assessment (triage) is done on arrival and appropriate assistance provided for every patient according to priority of condition. Immediate medical attention is given for life threatening conditions. For less critical cases it may be necessary for you to wait for a period of time before being examined by a doctor.

Program Details

When you arrive at the Emergency Department, you will see a Triage Nurse. This nurse will complete an assessment and listen to why you are here. You will be assigned a Triage Level according to your symptoms and vital signs. You will then proceed to registration. After registration is complete, you will have a seat in our waiting area. Waiting times can fluctuate minute to minute; there is no way to predict a waiting time.

Sometimes the Triage Nurse will be able to complete some lab or imaging tests while you wait. You may be brought into the department for these and then asked to sit back in the waiting room. This is to expedite the flow through the department as efficiently as possible.

If you have been waiting over four hours or your condition is changing, please see the Triage Nurse again. If you have been triaged and no longer want to stay, please notify the Triage Nurse prior to leaving. Your care and well-being are of utmost importance to us.

Please understand there is no tolerance for abusive behaviour of any kind. You will be asked to leave by our security if there is any verbal or physical abuse towards staff.

How You Can Help Us

Your preparedness helps our Emergency Department team provide the best possible care for you and others. Here’s how you can make your visit smoother and more efficient:

Bring Your Ontario Health Card (or Other Insurance Information)

Please bring your valid Ontario Health Card (OHIP) with you when you arrive. If you are covered by other health insurance, bring that documentation as well. Having this information ready ensures your registration and treatment process moves quickly and accurately.

Plan for Your Own Transportation Home

After your assessment and treatment, you or your family are responsible for arranging and covering the cost of transportation home. The hospital does not provide rides or taxi services, so please plan ahead by having a family member, friend, or taxi contact available if you expect to need assistance.

Be Prepared to Wait

Emergency wait times can vary depending on how many patients arrive and the severity of their conditions. While we do our best to see everyone promptly, some visits can be lengthy.
We encourage you to bring items that will make your wait more comfortable, such as:

    • Snacks or drinks (if your medical condition allows)
    • A book, tablet, or iPad
    • Phone and charger

We appreciate your patience and understanding as we care for those in the greatest need first.

Bring Your Medications and a Current List

If you take prescription medications, over-the-counter drugs, or supplements, please bring them with you, or bring a complete, up-to-date list that includes:

    • Medication names and dosages
    • When and how often you take them
    • Any allergies or adverse reactions

Since wait times can sometimes extend past your usual dosing schedule, having your medications on hand ensures you can continue them as prescribed.
