Living Here: Daily Life & Practical Info

From daily routines and visiting hours to packing tips and safety measures, here’s what residents and families need to know about everyday life at LACGH’s Long-Term Care Home.

Supporting Your Everyday Living

Living in long-term care should feel as comfortable and seamless as possible. That’s why our team at LACGH focuses on creating a home-like environment where residents’ practical needs are anticipated and supported. This page includes important information about visits, what to bring, safety, smoking policy, personal laundry, mail, and preparing for discharge.

Visiting Our Home

Our facility welcomes family and friends. Please refer to current Public Health guidance and our Visitor Policy for any updates or seasonal restrictions.
  • Visitors should use the main hospital entrance
  • All exterior doors are secured for safety
  • Visitors may be screened for illness based on health protocols (e.g., COVID-19)

Suggested Items for Your Stay

To help residents feel comfortable and prepared, we suggest bringing:
  • Comfortable clothing and sleepwear
  • Sweaters and pants
  • Underclothes
  • Adaptive clothing, if needed
  • Non-slip shoes and slippers with closed heels
  • Toiletries (scent-free): toothbrush, toothpaste, comb or brush, deodorant, shampoo, shaving items, razors, denture care products, etc.
Please ensure that all personal belongings are clearly labelled, including clothing, dentures, glasses, and hearing aids.

Additional Costs

There is no client fee as the Program is funded by the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care. However, you will be charged for some additional services such as television, prescriptions and dispensary fee.
You will also be responsible for transportation to and from medical appointments. Information regarding transportation options can be provided by the unit clerk.
Dental, Foot Care and Hairdressing Services are available at a cost. Please contact the individual for the service you would like provided.

Laundry Services

Family members are encouraged to launder residents’ clothing. However, we can provide laundry service upon request. Please ensure all clothing items are labelled for easy identification.

How to Address Mail

Mail will be delivered directly to residents’ rooms. Please ensure mail is properly addressed:

Preparing for Discharge

A Home & Community Care South East Coordinator will support the discharge planning process if residents are transitioning to another Long-Term Care Home. Transportation arrangements and follow-up care will also be reviewed at this time.

Resident and Family Security & Safety

  • All exterior doors are secured to prevent unauthorized entry/exit
  • Fire drills are held monthly on all shifts; night drills are silent
  • A generator supports essential services during power outages
  • Fans and power bars must be approved by Maintenance; extension cords and scatter rugs are not permitted

Keep Personal Items Safe

We advise residents not to bring valuables. If valuables must be kept in the room, a secure safe is available and can be set up at admission.
